3. EVOLUTION OF THE CONCEPT OF KALAGRAMAM
Though Vellinezhi was known for its tradition of Art and as a birth place of many
famous artistes, the idea of Kalagramam is a recent development.
It all started with the publication of a series of articles about Vellinezhi, under the title
Kaliyarangite Paitrukam (The Tradition of Kathakali Theatre) in the Malayalam Daily
Malayala Manorama during July 9-14, 2012. These articles projected the traditional importance
of Vellinezhi and its art forms. Another daily Mathrubhumi followed the suit for two
days (July 12, 13). From 21 to 27 August Malayala Manorama conducted a Seminar on the
subject of Kalagramam. This Seminar kindled interest and awareness in public and manySubsequently, the matter was put up to higher governmental authorities. Cultural
Oraganisations, Artistes and connoisseurs unanimously supported the project put forward
by Malayala Manorama. Hon. District Collector Sri P. M. Ali Asgar Pasha, IAS took special
interest and on his request the District Tourism Promotion Council came forward with
Development programmes. Sri P. N. Suresh, Hon. Vice Chancellor, Kalamandalam
Deemed University of Arts, drafted a detailed plan for execution to bring the dream to
reality.
On September 29th Vellinezhi Grama Panchayat passed a resolution and declaring
Vellinezhi as Tauryathrika Gramam.
On October 13th Sri. Anil Kumar, Hon. Minister of Tourism inagurated the Seminar
on Vellinezhi Kalagramam. In this function the Minister officially declared Vellinezhi as
Kalagramam. In the open forum discussion M. P. Rajesh (Hon. M.P ), Smt. K.S. Saleekha
(Hon. M.L.A.), P. N. Suresh (Hon. Vicechancellor, Kalamandalam Deemed University of
Arts), K.A. Francis (Chairman, Kerala Lalithakala Academy), T.N. Kandamuthan (President,
District Panchayat), K. C. Raman Kutty (President, Block Panchayat), Smt. C. G.
Geetha (President, Gram Panchayat), V. Haridas (Vice President, Gram Panchayat), O. N.
Damodaran Nambuthiripad, Roy Philip (Co-ordinating Editor, Malayala Manorama), . . . .
and many distingushed personalities from all political parties and from different walks of
life actively participated. They unanimously offered their whole-hearted support for the
concept of Kalagramam.
On January 5, 2013 a formal official meeting was called by the District Collecter
in his chamber. The plan of operation was discussed. It was felt that an advisory body is tobe formed for planning and execuing Kalagramam Projects.
January 28, 2013: A public meeting was held at the Panchayat Hall. Hon. District
Collector who is also the Chairman of DTPC explained the concept of Kalagramam
project. He sought the opinion of public in this regard. Sri T. A. Padmakumar, Secretary,
DTPC narrated the sequence of events. He also explained the roll of DTPC in promoting
Cultural Tradition in the District. Commenting on the quiries, the Secretary opined that
DTPC is not undertaking the responsibility of Kalagramam Project with a view to earn
funds or to promote Tourism. DTPC is committed to the Culture and Tradition of the Country.
This Project might, most probably incur expenses unlike other DTPC Projects. DTPC
is ready to utilise its resourses unconditionally for the purpose of Protection and Preservation
of Tradition, he added.
The DTPC executive committe held on March 2, 2013 announced the formation
of an Advisory Committee of Vellinezhi Kala Gramam.
On April 4 2013, the first meeting of the Advisory Committee was held at
collectorate. In the absence of District Collector, the meeting was presided by Additional
District Magistrate. Decisions taken on various matters are as follows:
(i) Decided to install appropriate monuments in the name of renowned artistes.
The work and life contribution of the artist are to be narrated on the plates installed.
(ii) Preparation of a Directory of Artistes and history of Kalagramam was sanctioned.
The responsibility was entrusted to Vellinezhi Achuthan kutty.
(iii) Decided to send a request to the Department of Education to resume Teaching of
April 19, 2013

(iv) The official inaguration of Kalagramam will be done by the Hon. Minister of Tourism
on 19th April 2013 at 10 AM.
(v) Unveiling of the photograph of late Dr. Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair
will be done at the inaugural function.
(vi) A meeting at Panchayat level will be held on April 7 2013, to discuss preparations
required felicitate the inagural function.
On April 6th a meeting was held at Panchayat Office. The main suggestions and
decisions that precipitated are as follows-
(i) A Swagathasangam was formulated to fecilitate the inaugural function to be held on
April 19, 2013.
(ii) Sri O. Vijayakumar was selected as the the Convenor of the Swagathasamgham.
(iii) The Venue of Inaugural function was decided to be at the Govt. High School,

(iv) Felicitation of Sri Kalamandalam (Truppalamanda) Nataraja Varier:
This retired Maddalam Teacher and renowned Maddalam Player built an open-air
Auditorium (spending about Rs 5,00, 000) and dedicated it to Vellinezhi High School.

In a festival atmosphere, the Hon. Minister of Tourism Sri A. P. Anil Kumar was received
and led to the dias with the accompaniments of Locall Government Authorities,
Vice Chancellor of Kalamandalam Deemed University, Member of Parliament, M.L.A etc.
In the inagural function, presided by Hon. M.L.A. Smt. K. S. Saleekha, Sri P.M. Ali11

M.P) payed his homages to late Dr. Kalamandalam Raman kutty Nair and unveiled the the

Deemed University of Arts) felicitated Kalamandalam Nataraja Varier. The function was
decorated by the presentation of native art forms Parichamuttu Kali and Cholliyattam etc.

vellinezhy :2. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
During the Chera-era (by A.D. 8th Century), the Geographical area between
Bharathapuzha and Thoothapuzha; from Kalladikkodu to Pallippuram (Pattambi) was
known as Nedunganadu Keezhthala. Nedungadi chiefs, who were the appointed Lords by
Chera Kings (of Mahodayapuram), ruled Nedunganadu. Chembulangad was the capital of
Nedunnagadis. Most of their palaces were situated around Kodikkunnu Bhagavathi Temple
of Pallippuram (Pattambi). A small outsted community of Nedungadis, known as Karthas
ruled this area with capital at Cherplacherry. Near 10th century A.D., members of
Thirumulpad community, who were said to be the relatives of Chera Kings, made marriage
ties with Nedungadi family, and eventually became the rulers of Nedunganad. In 14th century
A. D., Samorin, the King of Kozhikode conquered Nedunganad from Thirumulpads.
From A.D. 14th century onwards, as per the order from Samorin, Vellinezhi area
was ruled by Dharmoth Panicker family, who were residing at Thekkummala near
Thiruvegappura. To facilitate the judicial functioning some members of this family settled in
Poothakkad, Kulakkad and Puthur. The kings of Mysur, Hyder Ali and later by Tippu Sultan
attacked Nedunganad too. It is believed that some time after 1766 A. D. the soldiers of
Mysur crossed Vellinezhi on their way to Ramagiri Camp near Pattambi. , British rule was
imposed in this area in 1792 A.D. Then Vellinezhi and nearby area of Nedunganad became
part of Malabar District. In 1860 Nedunganad Thaluk was included in Valluvanad
Thaluk. Henceforth Cherplacherry, Ottapalam and Pattambi were also known asValluvanad. Present Vellinezhi Panchayat consist of full or parts of Kalluvazhi, Pakaravur,
Adakkaputhur, Kulakkad, Pothi regions of Moothedath Madambu; and Njalakurussi,
Kuruvatur, Kuttanassery, Thiruvazhiyode, Thirunarayanapuram; and Veeramangalam,
Chammannur, Mangod, Karumanamkurussy regions of old Vellinezhi and Trikkadiri Villages
of Valluvanad Thaluk respectively.
